Tropicana Hotel Las Vegas?

May 31st, 2009

Have you stayed here or gambled in their casino? I will be in Vegas for 2 days in June and we’re staying at the Tropicana. The main reasons I booked our room there is the low price and the pool area, which is what I’m most interested in. What’s the pool/jacuzzi area like? I will be spending most of the day at the pool with my 8 year old and I want to know if it’s as nice as the pictures make it look. How is the swim up Blackjack?
Are there lots of low limit ($5) tables in the casino? I know I can go to other casinos to gamble, but it’s nice to end the night in your own hotel so you can stagger up to your room easily at the end of the evening. ;)
Thanks for your help!

I stayed at the Tropicana for a couple of nights once for the same reason, the cheap price. I agree w/ everyone else that the best thing about the Trop is the location. The pool is actually above average, considering what you’re paying, so good choice there :) It’s very relaxing, clean, pretty, and has great drink service.
If you want to gamble in style, check out the very close MGM or Mandalay Bay. You’re pretty close to the Excalibur, NYNY, Hooters and Hard Rock if you want kitschy decor, $5 table limits in a place that isn’t so run down.
I ALWAYS look for $5 tables in Vegas, and the Trop usually has a few of em. Your chances are good anywhere on the strip during the day, but after 8pm they get harder to find. Swim-up blackjack will NEVER be $5 though :( Honestly, if you want a decent and consistent $5 table within staggering-home distance, I’d recommend Hooters (next door to the Trop). Sure, it’s corny and sexist, but when I was there it was virtually deserted. They treated my low-rolling *** really well and there were $5 tables galore! I even got some free slot play when I signed up for their members club.
    Hope this helps!

At 52 years old, only the Sahara and the Riviera are older. You pretty much are going to find the cheapest of everything on the strip at this resort.

Since the depression started, the Tropicana has shut down most of it’s shows, but they still have magic acts and rough comedians. My only concern is that it smells a little smoky compared to newer buildings.

It’s been in and out of bankruptcy for the last year.

The pool is okay. But there is the smell of urine by the corridor that leads to the elevators to your rooms. It is old and showing its age.
    Buffet is a disappointment.
There is a walkway with lots of old black and white photos of the original Las VEgas and many of the old performers. Milton Berle, Jimmy Durante. People from the 50s and 60s. It is very interesting. Hope it is always preserved.
Thankfully you are a short walk to MGM and NY.NY. Because the amenities in the Trop are below average. You will be visiting the other resorts.
    Enjoy this trip.

If it’s the pool you are going for then you will be pleased. It is a nice as the photos show it to be. The swim up Blackjack is actually inside so you have to swim through the large doorway up to it.
It has some of the lowest limits on the strip. Kind of a crowded casino and dark. Gives you the feel of old Las Vegas. You will have fun.

Lets say you get what you pay for. The Trop is very old and run down. The pool will be fine for your son, he’ll enjoy it.
I don’t gamble, but last I heard, there are virtually no low limit tables on the strip. Binnions, in Old Vegas had some low limit tables not too long ago. The machines are always buzzing though.
Not far from the Trop is New York New York. It has a great rollercoaster your son may enjoy.

The pool i svery godo at eth Trop as long as they keep the maintance up, it is cheap and cheap for a reason dont eat at the buffet but the rooms are fine as long as you are in a tower room and not a garden room. Last time I played swim up BJ (2005) I think it started at $10 and went to $25 I never saw it at $5. Trop adevrtise that they have a $5 BJ tabel 24/7 which they do but only one and you will b lucky to get a spot without waiting, during quiet periods they do have other $5 tables

The best thing about the Tropicana is that you’re in close walking distance to Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, NY NY and MGM Grand. So you have a lot to explore without having to go far. An indoor tunnel connects MB to Luxor and another indoor tunnel connects Luxor to Excalibur. The other properties are connected by overhead pedestrian walkways. Being with an 8 year old, I think your most enjoyable activity other than the pool will be just walking up and down the strip… except for the gauntlets of people who try to force escort ads on you. They’re not rude or offensive, it’s just a mild irritant you encounter frequently.
