I’ve played hold’em online, but not in a casino (yet). I was just wondering whether the dealer routinely announces what the pot size is after every bet, or if you are supposed to figure it out yourself from the chips that are visible on the table. Thanks!

Generally not in a limit game. Its up to the player to keep a running count. IN pot limit they may as well as no limit. I’ve never played or dealt them but there is no reason for them to.
Two tricks you can use.
1.) I would ask the dealer what he takes his rake at and watch for when he completes it.
2.) The dealer should annouce how many players are in the hand before each betting round. Just keep a tally of that (ie 5 to the flop, 3 to the turn 5+3=8 bets). Then multiply it by the smaller limit. in a 3/6 game, 5 on the flop is a total of $15 and with a bet and two callers equals 3 bets for a total of 8 bets. 8×3=27 dollars.

Nope, only really in a pot limit game, because the dealer keeps track of the pot at all times because that is the max. bet.
